Why do you wear makeup?

Why do I wear makeup? Well, for myself. This never seems to be a good enough answer. I must be doing it for the guys, for the girls, because I feel ashamed of my true self, because I hate my appearance and so on, I could do this for days. But why can't I do it for myself?

Modern society does put a lot of pressure on young females when it comes to how they look. I admit it, I was one of those teenagers that wanted to look like Kate Moss, have that super skinny and somewhat androgynous look and have a stunning Instagram pic every day. You have to be a certain measurement, your eyebrows have to have a certain shape and you should be contouring like Kim K otherwise, you're not beautiful.

We are pressured by society to wear makeup, simple as that. I used to wear makeup every single day, even if I knew I won't be leaving my house for the next 24 hours. Just in case the post man comes, just in case someone sees me or I have to FaceTime with a friend, you name it. I wanted to hide all my insecurities and flaws with makeup and it made me feel beautiful and invincible. A bit sad, right?

Now I'm a much older and a bit wiser. I've dealt with all my silly insecurities and don't need any face paint to feel beautiful. Nowadays makeup has a completely different meaning to me. For me it's the same as being an artist - my face is my canvas and my eyeshadow is the paint. It's another way of expressing my style and personality.

Yes, I wear makeup for myself. What about you?

  1. Great tips and this is such an important post I would have loved to have seen this as an early teen as I really struggled with my image.

    1. Thank Abi! I totally agree with you. It took me few years to actually think positively about my image, but you know what they say, better later than never! :) xx

  2. I feel like I've gone the other way - I wear makeup because I'm not happy with my appearance, but I used to be when I was younger. Which is a bit sad really.

  4. Lovely post, we definitely shouldn't feel so pressurised into wearing makeup for others. Recently I've been going makeup free quite often and I'm quite proud of myself for not feeling the need to wear it everyday anymore. My skin has been thanking me for it too! Personally, I wear makeup as a way of expression - One day I could have a smoky eye and a berry lip for a more vampy look and then the next day I could wear more pink tones for something a little more 'girly'. Makeup can make me express a different personality and look each time I wear it which is what I love about it so much :)

    1. Thank you for the comment Toni!

I agree, going makeup free is like breath of fresh air to my skin as well! It's just another way to express ourselves, why does the society think we do it for anyone else than ourselves?

  5. Fab post! I love the whole process of applying makeup and spending my time on it, mostly because I don't really wear makeup during the week. Like you say, I used to feel the need to always wear it but now I just don't care ha!

  6. I wear foundation and 'base' make up because my skin is too red and awful to look at. I do my brows because they don't match my dyed hair, haha. Mascara is a must because I want my eyes to stand out but I guess I use lipstick and eyeshadow because it is more creative and colourful! But all of this I do because I don't like how my face looks, not for anyone else.

    1. Thank you for your comment Harriet. We all have different reasons, but it's annoying when people don't believe you. I'm glad you're doing it for yourself! :) xx
